Suggested Reading.
Since this page is very new, you might want to check out the many excellent
Subaru Repair Manuals. I am making this page to fill in the gaps created
by only owning one of these manuals, as well as filling in anything not covered
by the manuals below. Am also hoping to make the online manual more
understandable and "idiot proof."
Factory Service Manuals. These are the ultimate resource, but lack in
the do it yourselfer details. They have decent pictures, and instructions
but don't cover multiple years either (but an 84 one would mostly cover the 80-84
plus the other models with the same engine quite well). These are quite expensive new, and
not a whole lot cheaper used. Available at Subaru Dealers, likely
available from Teague's Auto, and used can be found on Ebay occasionally.
I also own one of the wiring/vac diagram books for 84 years too.
How to Keep your Subaru Alive-John Muir. Awesome book for the
beginner and expert Subaru mechanic. Covers to the late 80's. Lacks
in the Carter/Weber Carb information, pictures (he used a good artist
instead). Great book at around $20 new from Barnes & Noble.
Chiltons.
There seem to be two types, I am not sure what the difference
is but I have the smaller one that is white 1970-88.
Haynes-Pretty darn good! AutoZone, Pep Boys, and other part stores
carry these, as well as book stores. Also commonly on Ebay. I also
own one of their emission control manuals that has the trouble codes in it.
Bentley-a very comprehensive and rarely found
book. No longer in print as far as I know. They are dark blue with
orange writing. Mine covers 1978-1984.
Clymer-reads
nice, not as many pictures but a darn good manual for the years covered..
I
also found a Beck Arnley Tune up and maintence guide.
AllData CDROM. I think these suck. But what do I know?
Available at Kmart, and AutoZone.
And there are likely more. Let me know if you know of any.
And...The Ultimate Subaru Message Board of course!!
