Center Lamp / 3rd Eye / Passing Light Wiring

Want to put a Centerlamp in? Here's your info!

Center Lamps or 3rd Eye or Passing Lamps were only found on Subarus from 1980-1982. They were a standard option on Subaru GL 4WD vehicles, except the Brat, which didn't get the centerlamp until 1982, the only year Brat that had one...

There are a couple of different ways to go about this...

Here's the description of the wires coming from the 6 connector plug on the lamp harness. This will be used for both options 1 and 2.

Option 1: Use a DPDT Relay from your favorite Electronics store. I got mine at Radio Shack.

First off, here's the relay and the connector Layout (may vary by brand)

and here's how you hook the wires up....

and you can package it up nicely like this. Then all you need to do is provide 3 wires to the package. +12V constant, +12V switched, and ground.

Option 2: Use a DPDT Switch. This is also a workable option, but you need long runs of wire, since it all has to go inside where the switch is...

Option 3: Use the stock harness, relay, and switch

In my opinion, this is only for purists who are doing a restore, or really trust their 30 year old wiring... you still have to figure out how it ties into the soob headlight harness, and it's too limiting in my opinion. therefore, end of discussion on that method...
